I liked the evening ambience at this place ... muted lighting but not dark, warm "wooded" feeling .. the wine was good, and the food reasonably good. Pita bread and hummus with grilled vegetables was tasty, the pasta was (oleo something) was very "oily-o" - what should have been drenched with olive oil was flooded with it ... the cheesecake (my daughter tells me) was worth a re-visit. Good place to go to ... Not a place to go if you are in a hurry - this is a sit-down-and-chill kind of place ... Go once or twice ... -

What do you write about a place that used to be a favorite haunt, and is now going to seed ... Went with my family on a Sunday ... for a forgettable lunch - where the buffet (a very apathetic, lackadaisical spread) was priced at an atrocious Rs 599/-++ and where a 1 litre bottle of Aquafina was sold at Rs.80/-!! When I remonstrated to a pugnacious head waiter, he told me that he could lower the price for me ... as if I was seeking his patronizing gesture.. I wonder if there is a law against such atrocious retail pricing ...

I had read about Siddapan's Mess in someone's blog. And that someone made it sound like it would be like being transported to a mesmerizing "another" land with unbelievably tasty food in the presence of the one and only eponymous proprietor, etc etc. My experience left me both disappointed and fuming. First - the food (for all the queueing one had to do) was nothing spectacular. Decent idlies, and good kaali doses with lots of chutney were the positives. It is rare to get doses made to perfection. My experience at janata hotel, malleswaram, left me in no doubt that this is a kind of dose paradise ... MMMMMMM ... what texture, what taste, the masala filling was just right ... the chutney super. The sambar was a trifle too sweet but hey, lets let some things just pass, right ? In the larger scheme of things ... My request to make it with lesser-than-usual oil was honored ...
